DISCUSSION ON HOMOGRAPHS IN TEACHING CHINESE TO VIETNAMESE STUDENTS OF CHINESE MAJOR

Abstract
Homographs in Chinese are words represented by the same character but pronounced differently and naturally they have different meanings. They are often the culprit of pronunciation errors and misunderstandings in communication. In this research, we used statistical, descriptive, analytical and contrastive methods to investigate homographs contained in some Chinese textbooks used for teaching in Vietnam. We also explored how these homographs were actually taught at a Vietnamese higher education institution to Chinese-majored students, thereby discussing relevant issues that need attention in learning and teaching Chinese. We hope that the research findings can provide useful references to the teaching of Chinese language to Vietnamese students majoring in Chinese.
