Bài nghiên cứu này phân tích sự tương đồng và khác biệt trong việc sử dụng câu điều kiện và giả định với if trong tiếng Anh và si trong tiếng Pháp. Mục tiêu chính là xác định mức độ tương ứng giữa các cấu trúc câu trong hai ngôn ngữ này. Nghiên cứu trước hết xem xét các phương thức diễn đạt hai nội dung này trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Pháp, sau đó thực hiện phân tích đối chiếu dựa trên một ngữ liệu bao gồm tác phẩm gốc bằng tiếng Anh và bản dịch sang tiếng Pháp. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy mặc dù có sự tương đồng về cấu trúc và cách sử dụng thì của động từ giữa hai ngôn ngữ, sự tương ứng này không tuyệt đối. Bên cạnh đó, cảm nhận chủ quan của dịch giả về ý nghĩa điều kiện và giả định cũng đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc quyết định cách thức chuyển ngữ.
