A DISCUSSION ON PRAGMATIC NEGATION IN CHINESE AND VIETNAMESE
Nội dung chính của bài viết
Tóm tắt
Negation is a phenomenon that often occurs in language communication. In the context of this article, from semantic, pragmatic and contrastive perspectives, we discuss and compare the pragmatic negation in Chinese and Vietnamese. The results show that the pragmatic negation in Chinese and Vietnamese is expressed through the use of antiphrasis, repetition, avoidant expression, topic change, or by way of ellipsis, silence, or making inference about indefinite time, unpredictable or unlikely events, contrariwise movement with common law, or prediction of negative effects. Overall, there are similarities between the two languages, but there are still some differences in the characteristics of each language. We hope that the results of the study can be used as a reference for teaching, contrasting, and studying foreign languages and cultures in Vietnam.
