THE DIFFERENCE AMONG STUDENT GROUPS IN CHOOSING THE “FOREIGN LANGUAGE + VOCATIONAL SKILLS” ORIENTATION: A CASE STUDY AT THE DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE, HANOI UNIVERSITY

Abstract

“Foreign languages + Vocational skills” is a new development trend in foreign language education. The research to build an effective teaching model of “Foreign Languages + Vocational Skills” is an urgent job. This study uses the questionnaire survey method (n=304) to study the factors affecting students’ selection of the “Foreign languages + Vocational skills” orientation at the Department of Chinese, Hanoi University. The research results show that there are 5 factors that have an impact on the students’ major selection at the Department of Chinese, including: university, individual, society, profession and the other people. The research shows that the majority of students choose Translation as the strength of the university, but do not choose Tourism as the new orientation. In terms of major selection, there is a difference between freshmen and fourth-year students in the factor of university, between freshmen and third-year students in the factor of the other people, and the fact that students have worked before also makes a difference in students’ selection. In addition, the research also offers three suggestions for the education of “Foreign Languages + Vocational skills” in Vietnam.
