Abstract

Military abbreviations play a significant role in professional vocabulary and are widely used in the military contexts to facilitate concise and efficient communication. However, translating these abbreviations from Russian into Vietnamese presents a complex challenge due to both the structural features of Russian abbreviations as well as linguistic, cultural, and organizational differences between the armed forces of the two countries. This article examines several aspects of Russian military abbreviations, including their definition and classification, and proposes possible methods for translating these abbreviations into Vietnamese. Based on the analysis of original texts and their Vietnamese translations, the author identifies and characterizes four main translation methods: literal, transliteration, mixed, and approximate. This study contributes to improving the methodology of translating specialized military vocabulary and may be useful for translators, educators, and researchers in the field of military terminology.
