Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate and find out appropriate strategies to enhance students’ abilities to remember vocabulary, evaluating the effectiveness of these teaching and learning strategies at Ba Ria - Vung Tau College of Education. The survey was conducted in 8 weeks with the participation of 40 non-English majored students belonging to two groups (an experimental group and a control group), each consisting of 20 members. During the experiment, the research group took the roles of the implementers and the students in the experimental group played the roles of the clients who received the instructional treatment concerning the suggested strategies to enhance their abilities to remember vocabulary. The data were collected through an unstructured interview, a pre-test and a post-test. The strategies for teaching vocabulary in the experiment include: the use of games, guessing the meaning of vocabulary through contexts, intensive and extensive reading, and providing contextual examples to explain words. The results showed that students who received the treatment got considerably higher scores in the post-test than those who were taught vocabulary with traditional teaching and learning methods, in which vocabulary was taught completely out of the context. From these results, it can be concluded that the application of these strategies has certain benefits in improving the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching and vocabulary retention ability among the students as well.
