Code-Switching in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning

Abstract


The paper deals with code-switching as a popular activity in teaching and learning foreign languages. The theoretical foundation of code-switching in teaching and learning foreign languages is presented through a contrastive account of two views on the role of the mother tongue's (L1) in foreign language (L2) classes. Based on the recoggnition of the positive role of L1 in L2 classes, through an overview of researches on the roles and the functions of L1 in L2 classes, the paper affirms that code-switching need to be considered an effective strategy, especially in the first stages among beginners and/or elementary-level learners.
