Abstract

Based on the analysis and evaluation of the achievements of formal languages and generativism, the paper points out the influences and contributions of these two theories in foreign language teaching and learning. Reconceptualizations induced by the two theories have acted as crucial preliminaries for the establishment and development of the communicative functional approach in foreign language teaching and learning. This approach with its radical changes in perspectives and objectives of foreign language teaching and learning, in output teaching language, teaching materials, and second language acquisition has been acknowledged as a gigantic advance in comparison to traditional foreign language.
