Abstract

The modernization process of Vietnamese and Korean literature happened in the colonial context, aiming essentially at the creative activities to protect and maintain the national identity as well as national liberation. In this process, the absorption of the naturalism impact in particular and Western literature’s impact in general occurred in each country in the different ways, either directly (the case of Vietnam’s) or indirectly via the Japan’s literature (the case of Korea’s). This study is carried out to find the naturalism influences expressed in the Vietnamese and Korean literature through the typical novels by two writers: Kim Dong In and Vu Trong Phung. The study also shows alternative applications of the Western naturalism used creatively by the two colonial writers.
