Abstract

This paper attempts to describe the logico-semantic relation of expansion in Vietnamese clause complexes in the light of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). SFL was employed as the theoretical framework to describe the Vietnamese grammar in such works by Hoàng Văn Vân [1] and Thái Minh Đức [2] at University of Macquarie, Australia. In the last ten years, several SFL empirical studies have also tried to uncover some certain parts of the Vietnamese grammar in comparison with the English grammar. This paper is the report on the methodology and the findings of an investigation on the logico-semantic relation of expansion in Vietnamese clause complexes with the analytical framework modified from Halliday’s [3].
